So Le from Third on the Right suggested we have a Flashback Friday with an 80s theme. I've already given you a sneak peak at my 1980s but I hadn't shown you my Taffeta Period.
From 1985-1987 I lived in a university residential college where a highlight on our busy social calendar was the annual ball. I got pretty excited about going to these things and went all out: new dress, big hair, new makeup and always black stockings and black shoes.
I thought I had survived the 80s without resorting to white shoes but I was wrong there are photos of me in white court shoes. But, proudly, I declare that I never wore white court shoes and white stockings with a ball dress.

College ball, 1985 (17 1/2 years)
College ball, 1987 (19 1/2 years)
- actually, look I'd developed some taste and ditched the black stockings!
You'd be disappointed with the 1986 photo so I didn't put it in. No big hair, no taffeta, just a simple black dress (it did have shoulder pads 'though).
I have kept both of these dresses, although the green one was converted to a (short) skirt to wear to a ball in the 1990s (with a black velvet fitted jacket - remember that trend?). Oh, and I'm a loyal customer - my wedding dress in 1993 was made by the same place that made both of these 1980s creations.
And, in case you're wondering, that's Firegazer I've cropped out of the photos. He's shy.

ohhh I love it !! yes I remember the whole taffetta thing :)
And more I remember the who black fitted velvet jacket - wore this to my uni grdauation in early 1989 ...
And I love that you and the man are still kicking along - how romantic !!
Thanks for playing the game and joining the hike down memory lane :)
this is too cool !! le xoxo
I thought about posting a pic of me in a black taffeta gown with a cropped black jacket!! Might do it on another flashback friday (even had a mask as it was at a Masked Ball!!).
Geez you're gorgeous, M. You look exactly the same. And I had no idea that you and Firegazer had been together since you were a TEENAGER!!! Good choice girl. He's gorgeous now too. And kind.
I'm a bit disapointed that there is no tartan in your photos. Didn't you mention something about tartan?
xox
Sorry to disappoint re the tartan Fe - I don't have a huge supply of photos here with me in Sydney. I don't think there were many photos of me in tartan anyway - only the one on my previous 80s post and I think there is one of me at a school dance in about 1981 somewhere at home?
I beleive I have a very similar taffeta, drop waisted ball gown in my 80s past. Worn with a black velvet bolero jacket of course! Might have to dig up some photos if they're not too scary. :)
You ARE gorgeous ! and we all did the eighties taffeta thing - for me it was to wear to 21sts.
And I too love that you are still with Firegazer..
Wow, love the green dress, you look lovely, nice hair too!
Childhood sweethearts! Beautiful.
The similarities to my own life are a bit overwhelming! The taffeta dress I remember the most was the jade green one I wore to my sister's wedding in 1986 (with black stockings and black shoes!) You are stunning in both photos.
And I met my husband in residential college, my first year of university, married him and am very happily with him to this day!
I remember that 1987 ball - it was in the courtyard. I borrowed a friend's dress for that one.
It was interesting how at the start of Uni it was important to get the dress right and the hair etc and by the end it was whatever you could find!
Taffeta was big and so was Thai silk as I remember.
I had a green one in 84 with a princess Di frill as I recall...
*shudder*
Weren't you gorgeous. I won't wear court shoes now, and I suspect it's an 80's backlash thing.
Oh gorgeous. I remeber the taffeta period, how glam were the fashions? We really do look like soapies!
I have that first dress in pale pink. I had that hair too! Very stylish. Loads of spray. I shudder everytime I see a flashback picture of the shoulder pads... what were we thinking?
Ha - you have gotten hit with the taffeta stick too! I don't feel so alone and frilly now! The green is particularly fetching. I am loving looking at everyones photos, though atleast i can have the excuse that i was young and someone else dressed me !
The way he's gripping onto your waist he's not too shy!
Taffeta - the fabric so noisy that you could not move and engage in a conversation at the same time.
Sheesh...have just survived a major panic attack because I thought that you had unauthorised access to pictures of MY ball gowns.
You look stunning - and i'm impressed you could afford not to buy off-the-rack on student funds !!
I wore white courts to balls - with white stocking. They had a bow at the heel. Wore twice - with a light spearmint dress, and then a white ruched number. Hawt.
Phew - thought I lost my comment then, and was buggered if I was going to retype !!
Never had this msg before:
"Request took too long.
Your request took too long to complete. This is typically just a temporary error due to high network traffic or heavy usage of Blogger."
I did NOT take too long !! :p
I think we shopped at the same shops.
I too had a strapless tafetta number - mine was electric blue. I didn't wear white court shoes with it, but I did wear elbow length gloves. Very handy storage for the Alpine Lights.
we all owned the same dress. ha!
Do you and Firegazer still coordinate your clothing (see green dress & cumberbund)?
Thankfully not. That 80s phenomenon will not be repeated chez EasternMax anytime soon.
