If you were to think about moving to Sydney you might have to rethink some of your "must haves" when it comes to housing. Much of inner Sydney is built on steep headlands that jut into Port Jackson. For some residents the idea of a garage is just fantasy. Level access? what a joke!
More well to do property owners solve this with inclinators. Or complex cantilevered garages.
But some of the home owners in our area don't even have a road going past their property -just a steep footpath. Their car would be parked on the nearest road 70-100 meters away. Imagine carrying your groceries down this path. I'd be shopping light.
But then they do have the advantage of being so close to the city. And yet worlds away.
In their own little mini rainforest.
And a short walk from everything the harbour has to offer.

I would love to move to Sydney. I would just wander through the streets looking for Hugh Jackman.
It is so lovely. Surely the lack of garage space is well worth it.
It does look lovely, but it would drive me crazy carting the kids up and down those paths!
Hmmm....wandering the streets looking for Hugh Jackman? Sydney is looking like a good option. Shame I didn't think of that before we bought a new house in Melbourne.
We looked at a couple of houses in this little area but decided that, in fact, a garage and street access was better than living in a rainforest!
Mind you you still have to climb 16 steps down from the road to our yard...
I often think of these parts of town while I am pushing my double stroller around my neighbourhood. Although, I don't have those lovely views to gaze upon!
Coles online or some other shopping delivery service would be looking to good :)
I have spent very, very little time in Sydney. It looks so beautiful, thanks for sharing.
I had a girlfriend live around that part of Sydney and the steep steps do get to you after a while. I thought it was bad enough lugging shopping up 45 stairs to my old flat but those windy paths are something else. Thanks for your thoughtful comment on the blog yesterday too - much appreciated.
Looks lovely. In fact, I guess when you think about it, when we lived in Melbourne, we lived in one of those high rise apartment buildings. Our car was ages away (down a lift, through a tunnel of corridors then up a ramp!)so this would be no different from having your car parked 100m away. I was smart. I used Coles Online for my shopping needs!
Fascinating...
Proves to me I know relatively little about Sydney!
It would be worth it - you would stay fit .
We spent weekend around Northern beaches - I took a photo of the stairs one owner had to climb. OMG !
I live in a city that is completely flat - no handbrake needed flat. I do not have an appreication for hills.
I do like rainforests though.
And to think that I bitch about our house being on a bit of a hill. Its really just hilly enough that the boys can hurt themselves skateboarding down the driveway and that I have to give the car a good rev when reversing out.
At least I can park on our own property!
I would make Fixit do the grocery shopping if I lived in that place. I would just sit around and admire my beautiful scenery while he lugged it up the hill for me.
We have an out the back carport at our house, it is unbelievable luxury on a hot or rainy day. (Except the bit where I dash through the rain to close the gates, but I'm starting to train the children.) Or even if the kids have fallen asleep in the car, I can open the cardoors and windows and leave the kids to sleep there because it's behind a gate in our backyard and they are safe.
I couldn't do it.
Would the Coles man make the trip down with his little trolley ?
I'd damn well hope so !
