Today was Walk Safely to School Day, at least in NSW. Walking to school is a hot topic in this house. In theory we are only a 10 minute slow walk to school and thus this should be achievable every day. However, that walk includes our own version of heartbreak hill so walking to school usually involves much complaining and is only contemplated when I have an iron will and patience for whining.
Today, however, there was no complaining. Was it the practise walks of the previous two days? Was it the free piece of fruit waiting for them at the other end? Was it because it was declared a mufti/casual clothes day so the uniforms were left at home? Who knows the mysteries of a child's mind...
Especially as there was a complicating factor to the walk. Blossom left for a weekend long Band Camp today so we had extra luggage to lug up that hill:
But then maybe Blossom was so pleased with her new, completed.just.in.time.for.band.camp beanie that she didn't even think about her feet (but that still doesn't explain PL's generally bouncy demeanor on the walk).

The kids walked half way to school today. I am just not ready for them to tackle the Great Western Highway on their own yet.
Townsville is completely flat. Not a bump or ridge in sight.
having said that, for Pip to walk to school would take an hour and ten minutes because he would have to cross the river and the bridge is a loooong way out.
Good for you though, traversing that hill with band camp paraphernalia in tow.
I guess we could have walked to school today. Would have had to start out at about 4.00am. And there would have been a lot of whinging and whining involved (and girls probably would have complained a lot too...) But I guess in theory, we could have done it.
Love the beanie!
Beanie looks great. Good on your for walking.Ironically given we walk every day , Kingsley got a lift to school to save energy for the cross country event that morning!
I think I was the only parent who actually DROVE their kids to school on this day. They walk to and from school every single other day of the year, but the suitcases (the handle broke on F's), sleeping bags, large instruments and music bags required for Band Camp made it simply unfeasable. I did notice that I was the ONLY parent in the drop off zone outside the school gate. *blush* *shame*
Major Dad planned to run while the kids cycled but Miss A was unwell and stayed home sick from school even while he took Master A in the car. She must have been sick, being brave enough to stay home alone for 10 minutes, (note: she did make 2 calls to Dad and 1 to Mum in that time).
It was an adventure
I know that hill. Climbed it for 6years, rain, hail or shine. Funny that Peppermint P mentions Townsville - I remember being there on a school holi and very impressed with it's flatness - you could even ride a bike with glee ( as opposed to grunt ). Loved it.
That is one lovely beanie. I wish we lived in walking distance of school. But a five mile walk just isn't feasible, is it?
The mind of a child has to be the most complex thing known to psychology.
