Gotta love KelpieBlossom's teacher. Remember I said she hated homework but that she would set it each fortnight per school policy - and she doesn't care if the child doesn't hand it in?
Here is this fortnight's homework (she's in Year 4):
- 20 minutes reading, daily
- Practise your spelling
- Teach a parent something you know about St Valentine
- Help with the housework or gardening
- Tell a joke to a family member
- Help with the shopping
- Play a game with a family member
- Practise your tables
In other words, she's asking her students to be an active family member. Our house is so much more relaxed without 10 maths/science/HSIE worksheets and a mini project to complete.
I should've sent her a Valentine's Day card.
P.S. I'm off to Padawan Learner's Parent-teacher info session on Monday. His teacher is new, young, blonde and looks like a Barbie doll. I bet the classroom is full of Dads, all of whom will volunteer to do reading groups.

I love this teacher! She needs to be cloned and spread around the world.
I clone mrs.g's suggestion. twice.
That is simply marvelous.
MARVELOUS.

Oh look - I said it twice - for those in the cheap seats.
Great homework list. We would have serious trouble if we had to do much beyond the home readers. Can't think what it'll be like when I have two at school.
Queenie's teacher apparently did his thesis at university on 'homework'. He wasn't explicit about the findings of his research, but I got the distinct impression he's not a big fan of it.
YAY!
I love her and I wish she was our teacher.
Have I said this before? I am a teacher - we all hate homework. I bet there was a stream of parents ot the office to complain that their children will be left behind because of your teacher's homework strategy. It is parents with ridiculous expectations of their children who love homework. Sadly there seems to be a lot of them.
I have parent night this week. I don't look like a barbie - no dads for me...
Tracey, you are so right. I'm sure there was a line of parents ready to complain. This teacher even predicted this. Especially at our school which is full of high expectation parents.
Her true value, then, is that she is old and gnarly enough to not care. And I'm supporting her all the way.
I'd be right there supporting her with you M - this teacher sounds amazing.
Miss A is showing a lot more enthusiasm for homework at present. Not sure how long it will hold out. At the new school her teacher posts the weekly homework on the education dept. website. In addition to that we have the term project which is based on a space mission to (in Ashleigh's case) Neptune. The little conch has almost finished it already. As I mentioned I don't know how long the it will last.
I'lll be right there supporting her with you, M. As you know, I'm seriously feeling like I've won the jackpot with teachers this year. The only inconvenient thing is that H's sixth grade teacher is conforming to the school policy when it comes to homework. She, like our year 4 teacher, is more interested in the experience of being in Year 6, and ensuring that the kids have a positive and happy year to fill them with confidence before the overwhelmingness of high school.
At our 6th grade parent teacher info last night, the high-achieving parents were only interested in the Selective schools test. Sheesh. And this is the mainstream year 6! I suspect the queue outside the headmistresses' office is backed up for WEEKS!
what a fab teacher - how very p.c and family friendly!
