My grandmother, known to us as Carnie, died on Wed 7th January. She was 91 years old and one of the lucky ones to die simply and of old age. So while we were saddened to lose a lady who meant so much to us I was happy that I was at a funeral that really was a celebration of a life.
My 5 yo nephew certainly lightened up the proceedings when he looked in the window of the hearse then turned around and announced to us all:
"Carnie's in a box!"
Being Western Australian by birth, the kids and I flew back for a week to attend the funeral and catch up with family. While there for the funeral we were not going to let the opportunity pass to bask in the sunshine.
We had fun playing with our cousins and even more fun discovering that we had many more cousins (second, once-removed, etc) - such is the nature of family funerals.
And of course we couldn't let the week pass without eating a burnt Hawaiian Chelsea Pizza (it's sent through the oven twice) washed down with a glass of Mann Champagne while sitting with friends at the Dinosaur Park (in Kings Park).

I'm glad that you had a nice time in Perth even if your reason for going was a sad one.
Cottesloe Beach is so beautiful.
Sorry to hear about your gran, but it's nice to know she had a good innings.
Chelsea Pizza is still going? I absolutely have to stop there next time I am over that way - I am yet to find a pizza in Sydney that burns all the skin off the roof of your mouth as soon as you bite into it.
As for the Cottesloe pylon, I never thought I'd see the day when the Safety Nazi's banned climbing on that. WA has gone to the dogs.
Yep, Chelsea Pizza is still going as good as ever. However, it's gone a little posh - the days are gone when you played Space Invaders while waiting for your pizza then piled into, say, a Hillman Hunter with a Ram's skull strapped to the front.
(Can anyone tell that Boy on a Bike is an old uni college friend?)
I too am sorry that the reason for going back to family in Perth was a sad one.
It does thrill the kids though when they find new cousins they didn't know existed!!
kids are just so honest. Its refreshing.
That pizza sounds crunchy!
Wow, you really took me back with the mention of Chelsea Pizza. There really is nothing quite like them. Sorry to hear of your loss. x
Now you've done it... I have to go and get a Chelsea pizza!!!
Sorry to hear about your grandmother, and that being the reason for your visit.
Gosh, I live in Perth, and I didn't even know there was an official ban on climbing the pylon (but then I'm a Scarborough girl)!
Sorry to hear about your grandmother. Not a good start to the year.
Only 30 days and I'll be back in Perth — but rhubarb says it was 43 C there yesterday and Kings Park is on fire.
Chelsea Pizza - yay!
Cottesloe pylon — yah boo sucks!
Me too. Sorry to hear about your grandmother, but glad that you were able to celebrate a life well-lived and enjoy some time with family, friends, and favorite things.
So sorry to hear about your grandmother.
That pizza looks divine and I think I'd travel to Perth for that alone.
So sorry for your loss and that your trip over here was for sad reasons, but I'm glad you could enjoy the week (and the weather!).
Haven't had a Chelsea Pizza for ages - aaah, for those days when the Chelsea Tavern was the only pub you could into as a 16 year old after enjoying a burning hot Nog pizza downstairs. And to my teenage eyes the delivery boys were always so cute! I seem to remember hitching a ride home with one after a UWA Manics Toga Party...God I hope my daughters never behave like that. ;)
Okay. So I'm clear about behaviour regarding the pylon. But what about the bell?
Chelsea pizza. MMmmmm.
Kids are fabulous. Even in a sad situation they make you remember the good stuff about life.
Sorry to hear of your loss, but so glad to see your kids enjoying htemselves.
oh dear - I did miss your words - I was wondering where things were at - so glad some joy was sprinkled amongst the sad - welcome home le
