Bondi Saturday 3pm/Thursday 11am

Saturday, 3pm.

This is what iconic Bondi Beach looks like on a warm Saturday afternoon. People throng, it is difficult to park and tanned bodies play beach volleyball.

People swim laps in the famous Bondi Icebergs pool. You earn the title of Bondi Iceberg once you swim here at least once every day for a year. It is frigid here in winter.

Mere mortals enjoy the Bondi to Bronte cliffside walk. It is magnificent. And for three weeks each October-November it hosts Sculpture by the Sea.

This is a small sample of what you get to see along the way.

But to see it, and the ocean, in all its glory I suggest doing what I did. Go back when the Southerly (cold) wind is howling and a thunderstorm threatens.

Thursday, 11am

Yesterday a friend and I braved this weather and felt that the experience was all the better for having BIG dramatic seas, a howling gale and dark storm clouds as a backdrop.

And it was much easier to get a parking spot.

I can't go to Bondi on a sunny day, I'm too white-skinned.

Do people throng? Or do they 'thong'? (both types...)

What a great contrast between your two visits.

I prefer beaches on cold, dark days. I'm like Stomper, white skined, red haired and burn far, far too easily. Great pics.

Fairlie, I think they do both. Although this is Bondi, so people mostly Havaiana.

I do like the Macquarie's No. 7 definition of Throng:

7. to fill by crowding or pressing into

I love having a beach more to myself - weekedays are *always* good.

I could not join you on a cliff top walk. It looks magnificent enough from here, I don't need to go any closer!

I love the idea of Sculpture by the Sea. There's a parallel event at Cottesloe now.
Bondi looks amazing both in sunshine and in the wintry shots you show. Though I think I'd opt more for winter as my days of stripping off and lying on a beach anywhere are well and truly behind me.

Thankyou for sharing this - I just love the beach and sea in winter - even an NZ winter - so much better for the wild and windy atmosphere ...

The work looks amazing too - wish we could all come with you on one of your photo shoots ... cheers le
