Renovation Diary #3 - Exterior Colour Inspiration

Our house is an early example (1912) of the Arts and Crafts Movement here in Sydney, although more federation in influence than many of the examples we see overseas.

The exterior colours we have at the moment are cacky, and they scream heritage paint fashion circa 1992; think Indian Red, Brunswick Green and Clotted Cream.

On Sunday Firegazer and I surveyed local examples of the style for colour hints (see pics above). I definitely want the darker accents but not sure whether to go the 'putty' stucco or introduce mossy green elements as our architect suggests. The pale grey is intriguing but I'd introduce white windows and darker accents somewhere. The trend around here is towards the darker greys but, oh I don't know, I think they'll just scream 2010.

How can this be so hard?

Good idea to check out what the neighbours have done. I quite like a nice grey myself. Especially one with a HINT of blue or mauve in it. I like accents of rich morone in an exterior (depending on the house and other colours used etc).
Good luck!

I read this quickly the first time, and I thought your current colours were called cacky and scream.

That's how I like to pick colours...by their official names. How about a little Klavier, Babbler or Simone Weil, accented with Lexicon Half? No???

Great minds think alike! Like Fairlie I read your colours as called Cacky and Scream!! Perhaps I am not so Dippy after all!

Whatever you choose I am sure it will look superb.

Okay, now I've added a comma for clarity. However, it would be true to say that if the house colours were called Cacky and Scream I wouldn't be at all surprised.

Lovely! I do like pale greys myself (clearly being influenced but what is en vogue) but I am intrigued by the mossy greens. I think that would look lovely on your place. At least, I assume it would. You've described it very well and I don't have to walk very far to see plenty of fed green and cream examples around here!!

Dove grey, with white and charcoal accents.

(Did I ever tell you what my husband does for a living? ;)

Sample pots. That's my answer. Get a few and test them out. (suse's suggestions are good too.)

Luckily, such decisions are not a problem here – all houses are white. Anything else would stand out like a sore thumb. Of course, they're not as big or elaborately decorative as the ones you've shown. So I'm no help.

Nanu, I think you make a good point. House colours should suit the local landscape. We are finding that house colours that look lovely in a southern light (ie melbourne) don't necessarily translate well in Sydney with its harsher light. Our neighbour has painted her house in darker hues that I have seen look gorgeous in the leafier suburbs of Melbourne but here it just looks a bit drab.
