I hear that there is a crafting revolution going on in Iceland as they attempt to knit, crochet and sew their way out of the current financial crisis.

Apparently sellers of yarn, thread and fabric are doing a roaring trade there. However, having just crocheted my mum this knee rug for her birthday I'm not sure how profitable their endeavours will be.

This knee rug or small blanket used 1.4kg of machine-washable wool from Bendigo Woollen Mills (colours: Rosebud, Classic Musk, Soft Plum) and would have to retail at a huge price to make a profit. Icelanders must have contacts that I don't.
Luckily, I wasn't concerned with price with this one, it being for my Mum an' all. She wanted a rug that covered her feet and in twenty years time could be tucked into her wheelchair (!)
The best bit about crocheting this rug was the embarrassment caused to my Tween when I'd lug it to swimming lessons/cricket/music lessons to do a few rows. It got to the point that even Firegazer told me to leave it at home.
That's when I started crocheting these scarves. I made a smaller one for Blossom a week or so back but this one is strictly for the grown-ups.

It will be available as a giveaway on Saturday on another blog run by my very close friends ;) so make sure you visit that blog then.

I'm glad you've achieved something crochet-y.Well done.
For some reason none of the pics would show up (they all had red crosses) either in the reader or on the site itself, but I'll take your word for it that it was beautiful - the colours named speak for themselves! I liked the scarf you made last time.
I had a score in an op-shop this week - I found two (and bought one)black-edged granny square crochet rugs. Double bed size. For $10ea. Given that I SUCK at crocheting, and would be a granny myself by the time I had completed said item if reliant on producing it myself, I thought it was an irresistible buy.
Best of luck with the interview !
Yep, same as Laura Jane - no photos showing up.
Me too. I'm just imagining the loveliness. And giggling at your embarrassed offspring.
Could it be that icelanders have easier access to sheep and wool without the shipping costs? It being a small island?
Photos back up! I am having terrible trouble with Picasa. The photos go up, they stay there for about an hour and then they disappear. I've loaded them manually this time.
Thanks for alerting me to the problem.
Please tell your mother to give me my rug back.
I am about half-way through the rug I'm crocheting and will agree at the retail price if I wanted to sell it for profit (I don't)!
I love that you have embarrassed you embarrassed your Tween by crocheting lol
My daughter has already requested her own rug - she might get super-cheap acrylic I think!
Fantastic rug. We know how much you have worked on it, but obviously the result was worth it. Your mum sounds like a ham - saying she wants a rug to be used for when she's in a wheelchair!! Lol!
They are as lovely as I'd imagined! Giggling at Stomper Girl's jealousy.
You know how when you were at primary school there were the hockey girls and the netball girls, the Sherbet girls and the Skyhooks girls, the school shoes and socks girls and the scruffy leather slip-on sandals girls?
Well, I've always thought of knitting and crochet in that same dichotomy. And I'm more of the knitting girl.
However, having said that...you have created a perfectly lovely knee-rug! And that scarf? I think it may be enough to sway me to the Skyhooks side...
Do you think your close friends will let me into the draw for the giveaway?
Crochet, I think, has been much maligned by the string bags and granny square armchair savers of the 1970s. It's time for a resurgence.
Fairlie, are you putting crochet in the shoes'n'sox category or the scruffy leather sandal category. Hmmm?
Crochet is definitely the scruffy sandals, Skyhooks and netball.
Squeaks! (I just remembered what those scruffy leather sandals were called...it's been bothering me all day.)
Great scarf, I have to say it's an awesome accesory! I crocheted (is that right?) a blanket that I lugged everywhere almost the whole winter once. Everyone moans when they see it now. Whinge buckets. Loved the malteaser story, they are the most addictive chocolate snack ever!
I guess they are able to spend a lot more time indoors in Iceland. That may increase their craft input.
Just for the record I'd be a knitting Skyhooks girl.
I'd like to throw a quilting Bay City Rollers gilr into the mix though...
That's some "knee rug" - it's big!! Those blankies take forever to make.
Was Tracey talking about me? was she? did someone tell her I was a raving BCR fan when I was 12? did they? I'll kill them. Whoever they are.
Gorgeous rug. I bet they'd sell like hotcakes in Iceland, bankrupt or not.
What a lovely afghan you crocheted for your mother. I like to crochet also, but this year, I chose to read some of my many books, instead of crocheting the winter away.
I want to thank you for visiting my blog.
I hope you have a wonderful week-end!
Ann
Man - I'm in that competition - and you made it - what a rock and roll moment - speaking of that - can't crochet but would love to - just sew ... does that make me Kiss and dungeons and dragons or something? Impressive blanket ... very impressive
