Mistake. Big Mistake.
What a shamozzle.
What was a simple change that made sense to me on face value turned out to be mightily controversial for no good reason and resulted in factional infighting not seen in a Labor caucus. And I hadn't realised there were factions. Silly me thought we were all there with the common goal of ensuring our children had access to the best facilities we could muster.
All I could do was sit there, for two hours, while the shambles unravelled. One of the new Kindy parents walked out. Don't blame him. I only stayed because I wanted to hear the Principal's report and what was happening in the subcommittees.
Here is a scarf I knitted with the Noro Geisha ribbon yarn I was given as a New Year gift. I used a simple open knit I found in my 400 Knitting Stitches book (recommended by Stacey last year). I'm really pleased with the way it's turned out. Being a ribbon it is a trans-seasonal decorative scarf rather than one for warmth.
And above is my practice run for Mum's birthday present. Mum's birthday was on Tuesday and, not knowing what to get her, I asked her what she might like me to make. Mum said she'd like a knee rug and as a crocheted ripple blanket was on my list of 'to do' things this year that is what she will get. I've ordered yarn in lovely soft colours (exact details a secret) from Bendigo Woollen Mills but while waiting for the package to arrive I decided to do a test run using up left over balls of yarn in my stash.
I'm not sure what will happen with this practise run. It might be a small blanket for the kids, or perhaps a giveaway. I'll let you know.

So. jealous. Your skills with a knitting needle are amazing. I adore that scarf. The colors are bold, yet it has a very soft effect.
I hate PTA meetings. They often become a battle for control: my way or the highway attitudes that we don't want to foster in our children. Yet the parents are drawn in as if they are territorial animals with no higher brain functions.
Phew. Setting aside the soap box...
I went to my first ever P&C meeting last week. I had to leave after 2.5 hours - had an overnight upgrade to attend to (which finished at 5am - talk about burning the candle at both ends).
I was used to dealing with a lot of waffle and time wasting in the public sector, but the P&C was something else. Why take 10 seconds to resolve something when you can take half an hour?
I haven't been to enough meetings to see factions - I'll keep an eye out for them in future.
I might look a bit odd though if I take knitting to the meeting.
Wow, you can crochet! I am a mad crocheter but seem to be one of those people that needs someone to show her how to manage new stitches, for some reason I just can't follow instructions from a book. I mostly crochet in circles to make hats but would LOVE to learn that gorgeous ripple stitch!
Hi Sarah, I am a beginner crocheter (well, I haven't crocheted since I was about 12 years old).
The ripple pattern is a simple one but it has taken me several rows to get the hang of it - now I can't stop. It's just double crochet x 6, three increases, double crochet x6 , three decreases. The decreases are the tricky bit and that's what I had to practise. There are loads of mistakes in the early rows.
I went onto You Tube and googled the crochet 'how to' videos. Very illuminating.
If only you'd brought the knitting with you to tune our the factions! I love that scarf, tres chic.
Isn't You Tube fantastic for teaching you such things.
I stumbled across something called the Anne scarf by MCCrowley - you buy it as a PDF from Etsy. I suspect you might love the Anne scarf.
Your Ripple is gorgeous btw.
PS did you notice I did not comment on the meeting.
I loathe meetings.
You see.. because everyone went to school, everyone believes themselves an expert in what should happen in a school. When parents have their own self-esteem tightly woven with the achievements of their children (and their children's school) that further complicated matters. You'll find similar patterns of behaviour at every single school. Sad, but true.
Ah, you see our P&C have got around that whole factional thing by just not telling anyone when they are going to have a meeting. Works wonders (apparently).
Great scarf.
The woman who owns/runs a local kids clothing shop, which doubles as the local school uniform shop was telling me about a local school's p&c meeting, where they were discussing changes to the uniform it went on for t.w.o. hours and almost came to fisticuffs.
Not a word of a lie.
Thank God factions is what it was all about, as soon as you mentioned going to a P&C meeting I thought you were going to say you got roped back in to heading up something. I never picked you at being that silly (well not much anyway). LOL
love your scarf ... very very desirable !
as for committee meetings ... I have totally opted out of the kindy committee scene for similar reasons - I am now the 'mail girl' - picking up the post from the po box and that will be me done for the year !!
hang in there you are a wonderful resource for that school - le
