Are you participating in NoBloPoMo this November? I can't decide. I may give it a go and see how I travel. But I can tell you that we've started November with a bang.
Last night was a little windy, but not that windy. But windy enough for the pergola on our front porch to call it a day.
Here is our pergola in 2005 about the time we moved in.
On it was a lovely Wisteria. Here is part of this year's display.
And here it is again last night at 6.30pm just after a large CRACK! and the muffled screams of our wind chime heralded its downfall. Luckily no-one was sitting in those chairs.
We were planning to replace this pergola at some point. But just not at this point.
In the spirit of finding good things in the bad here are the good things to come of this situation:

And here it isn't at 3pm this afternoon. We took advice and decided the best option was to take the pergola down and cut back the Wisteria. Half the Wisteria is still there - you can see it in the right hand corner of the picture.
We may have to bring forward our plans for the garden.
Not that we have any yet.

In the spirit of finding good things in the bad here are the good things to come of this situation:
- it is much sunnier in the TV room now
- the possums have one less route to the roof space
- we (ie Firegazer) got fresh air and exercise taking it all down
- it gave me something to blog about

Awww.... that's very sad. But it does look good withOUT. Although when the temperature hits the high 30's, you may be longing for the shade.
PLEASE do NaBloPoMo! I'm doing it!
And I will see you at Band tomorrow. I haven't forgotten.
x
Yep, not looking forward to the summer western sun flowing through those doors!
Ooooer, big winds? Glad to hear no one was hurt and no major damage was reported!
Yay! That you're doing NaBloPoMo, not that your pergola fell down! It's shame that Wisteria is gone, but hopefully it will be able to grow back over whatever you replace the pergola with.
Yay! You're NaBloPoMo-ing. Happy to pass the baton to you. Just don't expect me to comment everyday...I'm having trouble keeping up with posts several days apart at the moment...
Nothing like high winds to bring forward remodelling plans.
Bugger! He did a good job to have it all cleared up in a day though.
Your post fills me with terror. Our pergola is rotting away and I know that one day we'll hear a crack and the whole lot will be on the ground.
It's only the glory vine holding it up at the moment.
ouch - that hurt ! poor wisteria - am sure it will bounce back ...
I'm with Fe - pllllleaaase do NaBloPoMO with us :)
Also I am reading eat pray love too - some parts have me in big sobbing tears, some make me want to throw it away as disbelief raises within me .... how are you finding it ... le
ps does this mean I can come to book club :)
Cellobella: As Dad said - we now know the answer to whether it was the Wisteria holding up the pergola, or the pergola holding up the Wisteria. Unfortunately it was the latter...
Le: Am enjoying Eat Pray Love so far but I'm hoping she doesn't go on tooooo much about her spiritual journey, or about the italian guys she's NOT kissing.
Wow. Glad so one was sitting under it. Great blog. Good luck with nablo! I am participating too!
Ours did the exact same thing here - wisteria and all. Ours was seperate from the house and we never replaced it - the garden underneath likes the sun a lot more than the shade.
