Discrimination in a Tea Cup

I don't drink coffee. I don't have anything against coffee. I love the smell of coffee, but unfortunately it makes me feel ill.

So when friends want to meet up for coffee I have a couple of choices - hot chocolate, or tea. Ordering tea at a coffee shop fills me with dread. First I look at other tea drinkers - is the tea served in thick cups or thin china? Is it tea bag or leaf? Is the tea prepared first because it's easy and left to stew while the barrista lovingly creates the perfect coffee complete with leaf insignia in the foam?

On Sunday we stopped over at a posh coffee shop with capable barristas. I looked at other tea drinkers who were being served tea in lovely pots and thought I'd be brave and order a tea, only to become increasingly frustrated as the barrista fills the tea pot first because its easy and, phew, that one's out of the way then proceeds to slowly make a cappuccino and two chocolate milkshakes. By the time I received my pot of tea it was so over-stewed as to be undrinkable.

What is so bloody hard about leaving the tea to the last minute so that I can choose how long it damn well stews when it gets to the table? Do I have to order a hot chocolate every time I meet friends for coffee? Sheesh. I say tea drinkers unite and demand equal rights with coffee drinkers for a decent drink (without having to go to a chintz-filled tea house with side order of scones).

Firegazer, noticing my irate demeanor, said "So, I bet you'll blog about this now" (with, may I add, a slight roll of the eyes).

Duh, of course.

This is why I drink coffee when I'm out and tea when I'm at home. But I don't see why you shouldn't tell the wait-staff when you order that you don't want stewed tea. Squeaky wheel gets the oil...

...and don't be afraid to send it back. They won't learn otherwise.

You know, this is not something I'd ever thought about before but you're so right ... stand up for your tea rights!!

How about asking for a pot of hot water and the bag on the side?

Firegazer just doesn't get this whole blogging caper, does he?

I don't like to drink anything that is hot. Imagine how unpopular this makes me! I just have a water or a juice... (or a diet coke, but don't tell stomper)

I am often tempted to ask for a fine china cup, a jug of hot water, a small jug of water and some tea - but then I might as well jump behind the counter and make it myself.

What I want is for coffee shop staff to treat my tea with the same dignity as a coffee. Sparkling waters are treated with more flourish than tea.

I think I'll make myself a sign and picket the local coffee shops...

On a related, but different angle...I object to paying the same for a long black as a latte. Half the ingredients and half the labour involved. Surely there should be a discount for that?

You go girl...picket your local cafe...we'll be right behind you.

A long way behind you....

I never, ever used to drink Hot drinks. Nope - not for me. Wasn't till a couple of years ago when I started drinking tea and during my last pregnancy that was practically all I drank. Now I have 1 or 2 a day.

I used to hate it when invited for a coffee somewhere. Umm, hot chocolate anyone? I always felt like a kid.

And quite proudly I can say I have never had a cup of coffee in my life. The smell puts me off.

Ha! You sound just like Anthony. He's such a tea Nazi. Must warm the cup first, must brew for x amount of minutes.
Let's meet at a chinzy tea house. I'll eat your side order of scones.
