Appliance Change-over Year

2007 must be small kitchen appliance change-over year. In July my kettle (age: 7 years) died, in August my Sunbeam Mixmaster (Age: 5 years) died and this week my toaster (age: 3 years) died. I'm just hoping the things-happening-in-threes thing applies and no more appliances die. Oh, I forgot - my 12 yo food processor had a little accident (I accidentally thought it would be okay to put the bowl in the microwave, oops).

Of course none of these things are designed to be fixed. I now know to look to see if an appliance has screws in it. If it is just banged together it ain't designed to be fixed. I hate throwing out appliances. As far as I know my Mum's Mixmaster is still going strong after 40 years and I can confirm that her sewing machine is because I still use it. I hate that we don't design things to be fixable (at a cost less than a new one).

Today I bought a new toaster and Mixmaster and made sure they were ones that could be fixed. I hope. I probably should've looked on eBay for items that were 40+ years old just to be sure.

hi thanks for dropping by so I could now find your blog! How weird we both posted about Sunbeam Mixmasters on the same day! You are brave bathing your cats, we have 2 and they are hardley ever bathed as it is life threatening to us!!!

I have to take our Maine coon to the vet next week to be shaved under the arms etc - where she is quite knotted - because I can't even brush her let alone bath her.

Years ago we bought a kirchen aid mixer from friends who were returning to the states. At the time it seemed a small fortune but I am so glad that we did. Still going strong

I too have a Sunbeam Mixmaster and given the amount of money it cost, I sincerely hope I get more than three more years out of it!
I regularly bathe my cat and he just stands there in the water with a look of utter contempt on his face.
I love Mary's comment about having her Maine Coone shaved under the arms. Perhaps she is a hippy cat.

Our microwave quit after only one year..... I had myself a tantrum... the "they don't make things like they used to! Does no one take pride in producing a quality product anymore?" Luckily Sears came right out and fixed it for free. I'd try Ebay. Vintage is better.

Bad luck about the need for appliance replacement. I'll keep my fngers crossed that big things like Fridge, washing machine and hot water service etd don't follow the same pattern for you!

I'm in the market for a new mixmaster as well, but given the amount of time I have for baking for 8 months of the year (none) I am putting upp with Adele's hand beaters.

Ha I love the image of Mary's Hippy Cat!

I double-checked the instructions for my new Mixmaster - it has an actual engine (not just a computer chip) which is a good sign. There are screws on the base and it has a 5 year guarantee on the motor. So here's hoping.

I cooked a Banana Cake from the Mixmaster recipe book that came with it and it is delicious. All augurs well so far.

...but I am wishing I had the foresight to find a vintage one on eBay. I just love using my mum's old sewing machine. So simple. Forwards, backwards, buttonhole. That's it.

Oh gosh yes, I am sure appliances lasted so much longer when I was a child. The man who fixed my old fridge told me that they weren't really expected to last longer than five years these days!

Thank you for your lovely comment on my bags, I think you summed it up perfectly with your comment "one can never be the wrong shape for a bag."

So, when are you going to let me break another of your small electrical appliances? Or do you want me to move on to the big stuff and come and do a load of washing and really stuff your leaky machine?

M said...

Ha! Yes, well as ArmyWife is intimating, my washing machine is now leaking rusty water...great.

Oh, I forgot about the Dryer packing it in. Although, technically, that was last year - but probably still last FINANCIAL year.

There is definitely an appliance conspiracy...when one goes, they all follow suit. Washing machine is a bit of a bummer though...that's not going to be good.
