So, it's the sixth day PL has been at his new school and yesterday the class lists came home. In his year there are
Five boys called MaxFour boys called JamesThree BensThree DanielsBut NO Jacks (how did that happen?)
No other boys with PL's name, but I'm venturing that there are no other boys in.the.school with his name. Oh yeah.
But even more interestingly than the super-popular names is that there are a couple of golden-0ldies. There is one boy called Tony, one called John (with an 'h') and one called Graham.
I have been wondering for a while when some of these names from the 50s - 70s will start re-appearing. Has anyone got a Steven, Jason or Brian in the primary school?
On an unrelated, but still school, matter Blossom exclaimed at morning drop-off:
Look, every single mum is blonde, wears large sunglasses and drives a big four wheel drive. What is with that?
Um, well honey, that's just the look around here. Be rest assured your mum will still turn up in the unwashed station-wagon with just-washed and still-wet hair. I'm just too old and tired to care.

No no no.... she said "every SINGLE mum". She was talking about me.
And she's right. Sheesh, for someone who so doesn't fit into that catagory (and who does not drive to school drop off ever) I'm blonde, wear big sunglasses and drive a medium-sized four wheel drive. OH there! That's the difference (medium-sized instead of big. Phew).
(and M, honey, you may not wash your car, or blow-dry your hair, but you're still always gorgeous, AND... one of very few school-yard mums who I enjoy talking to :) )
hee hee !
My glasses are *ugly*, but AB stomped on mine last night, leaving me *blind* in this bright sunshine, and hence the "Lindy's" were the best of a bad lot and allowed me to get on with my walking ;)
And i've seen you - you've got that Princess Mary thang going on -if I had your hair, i'd never dye it !
:)
I know a Max about 9yrs, we have Ben & James next door LOL.
There is one Max, one Jack at playgroup but I didn't think Max was that 'common'.
In DS (15) kinder year their were 3 Steven /Stephen.
I saw a kid (almost 2) called Wilfred at the gym creche today ...(that's my FIL 's real first name)
My DH's cousin has a toddler called Reginald (Reggie for short) !
LOL at Fe's comment.
I meant there (really I did) not their.
Oh god don't talk to me about NAMES! We don't know if we are having a boy or a girl but either way we are not having much luck with names. And then yesterday a mum from my mothers group had a boy and named him our top boys name. So now I feel cheated. And my husband still thinks Mungo or Banjo are acceptable names for a son. HELP.
When I resided on the North Shore, the look was blonde, a Volvo station wagon, a labrador or two and pink fluffy sweaters.
There are three Max's at our kindy, three Jacks, and three Joshua's. There is one three year old called Gordon! I always just feel so sorry for him!
Oh I KNEW someone was going to mention a Volvo station wagon!!! ;)
Just glad it didn't have to be me!!!
xoxo
Parts of my hair are blonde, and I drive a medium-sized four wheel drive...guess I'll just have to up-size my sunglasses to fit in!
The name that I CANNOT believe has not come back into vogue is David. It was so popular with our age group, but do you know a single David younger than 30? (..and Fe, I mean a solitary David, not a single/bachelor type one.)
I was sure David would come back around again by now, certainly before Graham or Tony.
he he - I heard a funny discussion on names on the radio recently, and apparently "Jack" used to have connotations (think Richard) which is why it was NEVER given as a given name.
In 'Salina's first year at school, the Zacharys were quite thick on the ground.
Sigh. No Rodneys or Tanyas any more.
Okay, so I have to 'fess up that my unwashed station wagon is a Volvo. I kind of wear big sunglasses BUT I'm definitely not blonde. Or single.
Oh, and Fairlie, I love the name David. Like you I'm surprised it hasn't done the rounds again.
I know a 14 year old David. (and LOL M... he's both solitary AND single!!)
The ones that I hear a lot in terms of littlies are names like Isla and Roisin and all the old Irish ones. Oh and Elijah for boys.
Sorry... I meant LOL Fairlie!
Keith. There is a Keith (12 years old) in Will's dorm.
That startled me!
I am fake blonde with lots a grey and sunnies from the late ninies so not big at all ... and today I rode the pushie with the tag a long attached ... and when I do take the car it is a 1970s rover - but hey the seats are red leather and the outside is mustard yellow so we have no trouble finding it ...
I do have an issue with LARGE 4wds in the city - I just think they are such a no no ... or you'd better be a farmer in picking up the kids ... sorry M will go rant in my own space ...
And I wore my housework shorts to school yesterday ....
names names names ... orlando, tabitha and lucinda seem to be making a come back up here :) le
Your singing my song! I love reading about names. We have 2 daughters will names that are reasonably popular at the moment, a son with a name that no-one else has and a daughter with a name that is kind of in the middle. We've got a few children in the school who are named after parents or grandparents and so their names are a little out of step (Graham, Richard, Stephen, Lawrence, Carmel, etc). Names can be tightly clustered in unusual ways - my sister-in-law has a son named Callum, two other Callums in her mothers group, 3 other Callums in his daycare room and 3 or 4 other Callums who will start kindergarten with him. They only live 20mins from us but there are no Callums in the school or pre-school that we go to. Bizarre! She (sil) is kind of bummed about it because she really wanted an unusual name for him and he's ended up being Callum M. It's hard not to wonder about these things but my gut tells me to follow what you like and not fret about the consequences. Keep these name posts coming!
Are there any Philips? We were disappointed when a plethora of Ashleighs followed us. (we WERE first), but seem to have avoided that with Philip. We encounter one every now and then, but that's all.
And volvo drivers will always be considered as individuals, no matter their hair colour!
I have NEVER had anyone in my class with the same name as mine! We see a lot of classic names back in style here: Rachel, Emma, Ella, Matthew, William, John, Charles.
Wonder if the feminized male names will come back in vogue some day... Henrietta, Charlotte, Bobby Sue... Rob's aunt was named Claudette. Bless her heart.
A, My son is David and he is 17. We have a Jason at the high school. No Max's. I have a Steven in a swimming class.
(but we are a bit backward up here. LOL)
I have short hair and a 4 WD. But wear Transition lenses in my glasses.
Melinda - we have Harriets, Henriettas, Phillipas and Charlottes where I live. I'm Amelia and that's pretty popular now too but I was the only one when I was going through school and I thought it was an awful name :-)
My daughte was going to be a Charlotte, but due to its rise in popularity it's now her middle name. There are numerous Ella's, Tehya's, Katherine's and Kate's where we are.
Or Peter. I don't know any young Peters. But Climber went to kinder with a Stan. Also a Ptolemy.
Ours are all Max and Liam and Luca.
I went walking with a friend this morning. She's waiting for Dennis and Ross to turn up in the playground. Not to mention Susan, Janet and Jennifer.
And isn't it about time for a Kylie come back?
Kindy today : Lots of Mias and Isabellas ( Bella's ). Oliver and Oscar are hot.
No one with either of my boy's names either - I chose them never to have to be defined by the first initial of their surname !
Oh, and we've got an Andrew, and a BURT ! Yes, Burt. Who names their kid BURT ?
There's no way I can top H&B's Burt, but my youngest does have a Frank in his class.
Ruby, Ella, Jacob and James are big at their school.
We two large secondary schools close by, one Catholic, one Grammar. Its no challenge to spot which Mums drop off at which school.
I'm going to have to change my hair colour in a few years time.
H&B - I did the same, specifically chose names for the girls that I had never, ever heard used by anyone in this century and hemisphere. And wouldn't you know it...someone else had the same idea around the same time The Impossible Princess was born...AND they've ended up in the same class. So, yes, they are now Name and Letter. I.Can't.Stand.It. But what do you do? The poor teacher has to be able to differentiate some way or other.
I went to school without anyone having 'my' name. Husband was the same. And now hopefully our daughter. And we spell our names like they are said, no double e's or triple y's or anything. (I suppose we could have spelt Monet's name like this, Monayyye.) Anyway, that is a different post altogether isn't it?
I know of a few old fashioned names making a comeback. BUt H&B's Burt really takes the cake.
I'm sorry, but you're trumped by the KEEF at BMM's son's school.
We have an absolute plethora of Ryans at our school and Kindy. Lots of Joshuas. A Jasper, Chase, even a Precious- seriously! - poor kid...there are a few Jacks too. a Gage...really, And a Case - pronounced just like a "suitcase", Freddie, Ned, a Banjo, a few Pipers .. ooh, sounds like a marching band!
I know 2 Davids, under the age of 3
My youngest has another the same name in kindy, and the oldest had another girl with the first and second names the same but she goes to another school.
I trump you all - my sisters went to school with a Wilma, Wilber and Gertrude Verm (pronounced Worm) ;-)
