Three WIPs and a finished double moss scarf

Many, many moons ago when the bus ride to my primary school was an hour I learnt to crochet granny squares along with the other girls on the bus (it was the 70s, the revolution hadn't reached my country town, and boys did not crochet).

That was also the last time I crocheted, or did macrame or wound bits of wool around sticks. But then I saw a 1975 copy of The Complete Book of Knitting, Crochet and Embroidery in my local second hand bookstore and thought, well, why not.

It's not that easy you know. It requires dexterity that I left behind as a child but, finally, I got the hang of it. Trouble is I don't know how to stop so I think I will end up with the world's biggest granny square - which is okay, because I have lots of left over wool in PL's favourite colour - yellow. This will either be a rug for his teddies or a rug for his bed. Who knows.

Last night I started my second pair of socks. These are a birthday present for someone who has a birthday in October. Just a warning to anyone with a birthday in October...these may or may not arrive on time (I'm confident, but Firegazer is doubtful).

A few weeks ago I started knitting a brown dog. Or a brown bear, I can't decide which. It's actually a 1930s-Hollywood-glamour-style cape from this pattern. I can't tell you how difficult this yarn is to knit with. One mistake and the whole thing needs to be unravelled. Not something to knit in front of the TV.

And finally, a finished project. This scarf, knitted in a double moss stitch, will be a gift for someone sometime soon.

This is like our friend Prettty Essential. She was a knitter not a crocheter. Then she decided to turn her mind to it and of course - because she is gifted that way - she has finished rugs when I am still contemplating mine.

Some of us are finishers. Some of us are not.

A sunny yellow crocheted blanket would do it for me!

Is it spring that has brought out all this creativity? Wonderful to see what you're up to.
Oooh that stole does look like hard work. That hairy wool would be a bugger to knit with. Good job it's not a full-length coat.

Your scarf looks beautiful.

I've managed to learn the basics of crotchet, but knitting socks looks way to hard! I see them all over blogs, knitted in all sorts of patterns, and I just can't imagine how you do it.

Socks are a strangely addictive thing.

I find them difficult to start because of the four-needle thing but then I get the hang of them.

Trouble is you are so relieved to finish one sock only to realise you have to start all over again to finish the pair...

Your book doesn't tell you how to stop? You should complain.

My birthday's in June (next year) if you can't get them done for the October birthday person. Just saying.

You obviously need to acquire some one-legged friends.

And I some no-legged ones - never knitted a sock and haven't crocheted since 1973, but one day, when I retire, I'll become a crafty person.

Stomper: I'm sure the book explains how to stop, I just can't understand it. I think some things just need to be shown to me...

Isabelle: Yes, that would be handy. I'm sure there is a market for single socks.

Anyone who can knit or crochet has an admirer in me! Well done. Lovely work you have there... And that scarf, well that just looks so bloody inviting to one's neck (if it wasn't 31 degrees that is!)
