Kaftan Days Part III
Fairlie reminded me that 10 years ago, almost to the day, I wore a Kaftan to The Poolboy's 30th Birthday*. Spooky. Except that time I was also barefoot and pregnant.
This is exactly the kind of Kaftan I'd like to wear in Sydney now. Except maybe not so paisley. Or so polyester.
Oh, the comfort. The breeziness.
*not my real hair, not my beads, so not my sunnies and god knows how many people had worn that Kaftan from the hire shop before me without it being washed. blurgh.

In the south, where I grew up, we called that a mumu, and you were rockin' it.
I am assuming it was a costume party? Or do you attend all parties just slightly out of era?
PS sorry, I really don't know you terribly well and yet I'm willing to mock you... says more about me than you... feel free to mock back, I'll take it
You are starting to obsess darling! You need to make one or google where to buy one and soon.
You are also starting to make me think I need one. Do you know how ridiculous that would look in the mountains!!??
Mrs G: thanks, it felt like a rockin' get up too.
Peppermintpatcher: Mock away, I wish I looked that cool at all parties. Next to me in that photo was Firegazer in a Bob Marley get up. Complete with striped beanie and dreadlocks. You'll be relieved to hear it was a costume party.
Mary: Perhaps I'll ask Demis Roussos for his leftover Kaftans and wear one to the mountains.
Dodgy as it may be, it does look mighty comfy!
I could be convinced to wear one around the house as long as all curtains were drawn and doors locked.
Re Mrs g's comment - I knew they were also called a mumu due to that Simpsons episode where Homer wears one. All I know about the US I have learned from The Simpsons.
Oh, by the way, if you decide to make one, I have a pattern thanks to my 1970s Golden Hands books.
Very familiar with the mumu. Have been flashed by a mumu wearer. Not pleasant. But I like your mumu. And I assume you wouldn't flash anyone while wearing a mumu. I hope.
You need to get yourself that 1970s Golden Hands pattern and make yourself one. You're obviously not going to let this kaftan thing rest until you have one.
And can you then post some pics??
I found a fabulous MuuMuu circa late 1950s in an online vintage store last night. It looks exactly like the one in my photo except in a more tasteful black and white print. But at $250US I think I might make my own.
On the project list: 1 MuuMuu/Kaftan, 2 art smocks.
Hi M! Yes, I have surfaced - again. Seems my last attempt was ill timed.
Anyway, apparently you shouldn't have any trouble locating yourself a Kaftan "this season" as they are "so hot right now" after Katie Holmes wore one somewhere or another. Teem them with your "new season" Havianas and you're all set to go :-)
Glad to hear that I'm right on with the trends. I'm horrified to think that Havaianas have a season's look...
I'll take your word for it that you smelled bad but you look fantastic in that kaftan. Far out, groovy, peace man.
eeeuuuw hire costumes and sweat - there is always a flip side of looking very cool in your costume get up....... you look ace by the way
