It's billed as teen fiction but my guess is that many a 9-12 year old will be getting this book for Christmas with the movie version, The Golden Compass, opening in cinemas very soon.
My advice to kids is leave it until you are 11, the same age as the strong independent female protagonist in the story. I do think it is a shame to read some stories too young.
Warning to Fairlie: this book may contain Fantasy elements.

I have not read this book, but will add it to my ever expanding book list.
Thanks for the rec.
Thanks for the unnecessary warning. I could tell just from the cover there may be elements of short-statured folks who speak a language with too many consonents and/or unattractive people wearing fur-skins and other assorted clothing in neutral colours.
I'll be giving this one a wide berth...sorry.
Will is eleven and he loved it.
As for me - exactly what Fairlie said.
I've read all 3 and loved each and every one - and can't wait until the niece is old enough to enjoy them.
